DICE Ecosystem brought together industry experts in Zurich to discuss decentralized digital identity and real-world use cases. This new version of the event, organized by Trust Square, complements the traditional DICE Tech, which until now has focused on the more technical aspects.

At Validated ID, we were honored to sponsor and participate in this key event for the future of digital identity in Europe. Our VIDidentity team, represented by Guillem Sardà and Pablo Cosío, joined the discussions and shared our vision on the development and adoption of digital identity wallets.

What makes DICE Ecosystem different?

DICE Ecosystem 2025 took a different approach than traditional conferences. Following the Unconference model, the sessions were defined by the attendees themselves, which allowed for practical, dynamic and focused discussions on the real application of digital identities.

The main areas of discussion were:
Interoperability and scalability of digital identities.
Real use cases and their implementation in different industries.
Privacy and security under the eIDAS2 regulatory framework.
The role of governments and businesses in the adoption of digital wallets.

Key trends in digital identity

The role of governments in digital identity

There was consensus that public institutions should play a key role in the adoption of digital identities through harmonized policies. However, there were differences in the level of involvement they should have:
- Anglo-Saxon vision → The state sets guidelines and delegates responsibility to the user.
- Eurasian vision
→ Governments take a more active role, ensuring security and control over the identity infrastructure.

Interoperability and cross-border credentials

One of the most urgent challenges is to ensure interoperability between different identity ecosystems. Strategies were discussed so that verifiable credentials can be used without friction in different countries and industries.

SwissID: A digital identity success story

Representatives of the Swiss government introduced the latest progress with SwissID, highlighting:
- Challenges in citizen adoption.
- Interoperability with EUDI Wallet.
- Integration with verifiable credentials for use in Europe.

EUDI Wallet: Challenges and progress

The EUDI Wallet project team shared details about the deployment and pilot use cases.

💡 A key discussion was the management of multiple wallets on a single device. A solution based on the W3C Digital Credentials API was proposed, which would automatically select the correct credentials based on the context of use.

Privacy and security with Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKP)

The use of Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKP) to enhance privacy without compromising security was explored. While this technology can eliminate user traceability, it also raises challenges about its potential abuse by malicious actors.

Key factors for the adoption of digital ecosystems

In addition to technology, experts discussed essential factors to drive the adoption of digital wallets as VIDwallet:
- Scalability
→ How to ensure systems grow without friction.
- Use cases with real impact
→ Need for concrete applications that provide tangible value.
- Regulation and trust
→ Without a clear regulatory framework, adoption could be slowed.

Use cases: Where are we and what is missing?

One of the biggest challenges remains the mass adoption of digital wallets. Although there are multiple pilots, the market has not yet reached a tipping point. The most promising use cases include:
Age verification for purchases and events.
Secure access to events using verifiable credentials.
Automation of KYC processes and digital onboarding.
Interoperability in government digital identity within the EU.

The main challenge? Improving user experience and eliminating friction to encourage mass adoption. DICE Ecosystem 2025 demonstrated that decentralized digital identity continues to advance, although it still faces challenges in interoperability, regulation and user experience.

With the imminent entry into force of eIDAS2, it is expected that digital wallets will begin to consolidate as a standard in Europe. However, it remains to be seen how tech giants such as Apple, Google and Samsung will impact this process, and what role the private sector will play in this new era of digital identity.

At Validated ID, we remain committed to developing secure, interoperable digital identity solutions aligned with European standards.
